Tragedy Strikes Gulmarg: Avalanche Claims Foreign Skier’s Life
In a devastating turn of events, an avalanche hit the famous ski spot Gulmarg in Indian Kashmir, leaving at least one foreign skier dead and several others trapped. The incident occurred amidst heavy snowfall, with Gulmarg receiving around 5 feet of snow this week, prompting authorities to issue an avalanche warning.
Rescue Efforts Underway:
Manzoor Ahmad, leading the rescue team, confirmed the casualty and the rescue of five individuals. The nationality of the deceased remains unknown. The trapped skiers, mostly foreigners, await rescue as authorities initiate a massive operation led by the Gulmarg Development Authority CEO, Waseem Raja.
Risky Winter Sports:
Despite its allure for winter sports enthusiasts, Kashmir’s Himalayan region has a history of avalanche-related accidents. Last year, two Polish skiers lost their lives, and 19 others were saved following an avalanche in the same Gulmarg area.
